Most hurricane checklists start with water and batteries. This one starts with your insurance, because once a hurricane nears Florida, property insurers stop accepting new applications and requests to increase coverage. By then, the policy you have is the policy you have.
I put this together so you can print it, keep it on the fridge, and work through it a little at a time before the next storm. Every item comes from a Florida state agency, Sarasota County or a federal safety agency, with sources listed under each section. If you have questions about your own policy, call us at (941) 225-2335.
1. Your insurance (start now)
Do these before a storm is on the map. They're the steps that make a claim easier later.

2. Your supply kit (start now)
The Florida Department of Health recommends supplies for 3 to 7 days. Keep your kit somewhere everyone in the house can reach it.

3. Know your evacuation level and get local alerts (start now)
Sarasota County orders evacuations by level, so look up yours before a storm, not during one.

4. When a watch or warning is issued
Knowing what each alert means helps you act at the right time.
Sources: National Hurricane Center; Florida Insurance Consumer Advocate; Sarasota County Emergency Services
5. Stay safe during and after the storm
The danger doesn't end when the wind stops. Flood water, generators and downed lines all need care.
Sources: National Weather Service; CDC; U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission; Sarasota County Emergency Services
6. If your home is damaged
Document first, protect the house second, then call us.
When you call us, have your home inventory, damage photos and repair records handy.

7. Avoid post-storm scams
Scammers show up fast after a storm. These steps protect your claim and your wallet.
